Everyone knows that canning is one of the easiest and most common ways to raise money for Dance Marathon. Your friends are probably coming to you with what sound like tall tales of raising $100 in just an hour at some store in your area!
It might all sound good in theory, but you’re probably thinking to yourself: But what is canning? How would I do it? Will patrons be frustrated if asked for money? When should I go? And probably tons of other questions as well.
Canning is the act of standing outside a store with a can in your hand to ask for money to support a charity
What do I need?
A can is preferable, but a jar or something of that sort works as well
A label with the logo of the charity already put on your can
Basic knowledge about your charity and about Dance Marathon
Optional: Pamphlets or sheets of paper with information or links for the charity
When and where
do I go?
Fast Food/Drink restaurants, Grocery Stores or Farmer’s Markets
All of these places should either be approved by the Fundraising committee, or you should call ahead to ask if you can can there
Dunkin Donuts, Village Market and Jewel are usually safe bets
Go when you think the store would be most trafficked, or when you think patrons would appreciate your commitment most (snowy or rainy days)
i.e. Mornings for Dunkin and midday on weekends for Village Market
